CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 2,000 pounds of food was collected at Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE: NOC) Charlottesville campus for the Blue Ridge Area and Thomas Jefferson Area food banks. The company's 450 Charlottesville employees collected 2,637 individual food items in only two weeks.
The donation resulted from Northrop Grumman's first Engineering Week (E-Week) Department Food Drive Challenge, held recently in Charlottesville as a new community service activity. Northrop Grumman employees competed in departmental teams to collect the food.
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank provided more than 18 million meals to hungry families during 2013, and this donation was one of the larger single-event donations they have received.
"Two-thousand pounds is a substantial amount of food. It contributes to our overall annual distribution of 3.2 million pounds, just from the Thomas Jefferson (Charlottesville) Branch," said Joseph Caputi, Branch Manager, of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. "To break it down into more practical terms, 2,000 pounds equals more than 1,600 meals, which helps the 26,000 individuals we assist each month."
"This outstanding result for our first-ever E-Week Department Food Drive Challenge was extremely encouraging and represents a heartfelt effort by our entire campus," said Bill Hannon, vice president of Northrop Grumman's Maritime Systems business unit. "We look forward to continuing this tradition and hopefully breaking this record next year."
