LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WZDX) - A diesel fuel spill closed a Limestone County road for most of the day Thursday.
It happened around 9:00 in the morning on Bethel Road. Crews closed the road from Miller Road to Highway 251 while they cleared 75 gallons of fuel. The fuel spilled out of an 18-wheeler when the drive shaft became loose and ruptured both gas tanks.
"We're putting sand on the roadway trying to absorb the diesel fuel. That sand will have to be taken up and some clean sand put down to keep the roadway from being slick," said Athens Fire and Rescue Chief Tony Kirk.
Athens Fire and Rescue serves as hazmat for Limestone County and helped volunteer firefighters clear the scene.
