Accused Hit Man Faces Murder Charges in California
LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WZDX) - An accused hit man for a Mexican drug cartel is facing nine new charges in California.
Jose Manuel Martinez, 59, is facing murder charges in Lawrence County. He's accused of murdering Jose Ruiz, 32, on March 4th. He's also been charged with two murders in Florida.
Authorities say Martinez is now facing more charges in California. The Tulare County District Attorney says he's accused of murdering six people in Tulare County, CA, two in Kern County, CA, and one on in Santa Barbara County, CA. Martinez is a resident of Tulare County.
He's also facing charges of lying, kidnapping and murder for financial gain which means prosecutors could seek the death penalty.
Lawrence County sheriff's investigators tell our partners at the Decatur Daily that Martinez admitted to killing Ruiz and then opened up about his career at a hit man.
"We've confirmed 17 or 18" of a total of 33 killings in several states to which Martinez confessed, Sheriff Gene Mitchell said to the Decatur Daily. "We're not getting as much conversation as we used to out of him. Of course, he says he's told us all he remembers at this point. If he gives us more information, obviously, we'll take it and contact that state."
Martinez remains in the Lawrence County Jail without bond.
