Police Release Identity of Shooting Suspect, Officer Who Was Shot
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WZDX) - Huntsville police said Friday a man killed in an early-morning shootout had a history of domestic violence and assault.
Police identified the man who was shot and killed just after midnight on Stanford Drive as William Arthur Stogner Jr., 52. Huntsville Police Chief Lewis Morris said preliminary reports indicate Stogner was killed by a police officer's bullet.
Stogner was shot after shooting Huntsville Police Officer Jason Moore, 36, with a shotgun. Moore was taken to Huntsville Hospital to have shotgun pellets removed from his face and is expected to recover, Morris said.
Police were responding to a 911 call on Stanford Drive when they encountered Stogner, who was not wearing any clothes and had a shotgun, according to Morris.
Stogner fired at police, ran into his house and returned to the front door armed, Morris said. Officer Moore was injured during the exchange of gunfire, which ended with Stogner dead.
Court documents show Stogner had a history of arrests for domestic violence, assault and driving under the influence.
