HUNTSVILLE, AL (WZDX) - Huntsville Police have confirmed that one of their own was shot while on the job early Friday morning, and the gunman is dead.
According to Lt. Gerry Norris, the officer was responding to a domestic dispute at a home on Stanford Drive when the shots were fired. It happened just after 1:00 a.m.
The officer's name has not been released yet. He was transported to Huntsville Hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
Police blocked off Governors Drive to all traffic for hours after more than a dozen shots were reportedly fired in the area.
SWAT teams, Madison County deputies, and the Sheriff's Department were all called out to the scene to assist Huntsville Police.
The gunman was believed to have several weapons on hand. He barricaded himself inside the home and fired several shots at police officers. A second round of gunfire was fired just before 2:30 a.m.
Residents were evacuated from their homes on Stanford Drive and transported to First Baptist Church on Governors Drive.
