Reservists in Afghanistan Receive Care Packages from Athens Employees

ATHENS, AL (WZDX) - Athens employees supporting one of their own during his deployment in Afghanistan received photos this week of their support efforts.

City building inspector Erik Waddell, who is deployed in Afghanistan with the 663rd Engineer Company, sent city officials photos of the care package items they received Tuesday morning. Waddell, a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, is commander of the company.

"I cannot express enough how appreciative we are for the care packages sent from all our friends and colleagues from the City of Athens," Waddell said in an email. "It is amazing how simple packages from home change the morale of the troops and bring a smile to the faces of everyone involved."

City workers have sent six care packages so far, with items including Girl Scout cookies, coffee, shaving cream, lip balm and body wash. They have five more packages to send out this week.

The 663rd Engineer Company is in Afghanistan training the Afghan National Army how to use and maintain heavy engineer equipment.
