Restaurants Targeted in Utility Bill Phone Scam

FLORENCE, AL (WZDX) - A phone scam in Florence has targeted five local restaurants, according to officials. The scammers pose as Florence Utilities employees and demand payment for an overdue bill.

They spoof Florence Utilities' number so it shows up as a call from the company. Sperry's Restaurant, Rick's Barbeque, and Umi's Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi are three of the restaurants the scammers tried to call.

"They asked us for $1,300.28. That's an average utility bill which isn't off base, but the fact that they were calling saying 'Hey we're going to cut your power off at 2:00 p.m.' just sent up a red flag immediately," said Chad Sidley, General Manager of Sperry's Restaurant.

Sidley also says the scammer told him to call him back on a 1-800 number which was another red flag.

"Never give your personal information out over the phone. We will not ask for it over the phone. If you're behind or having a problem making utility payments, we will send you a notice you will get something in the mail," said Florence City Media Director Phil Stevenson.

According to officials, none of the restaurants fell for the scam. Florence Police are investigating the calls.
