Student Honored for Shielding Kids From Gunfire

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WZDX) - A fifth grade Montview Elementary student was honored Monday for a recent act of heroism.

J'Nay Bailey was presented a resolution by State Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice and State Board of Education District 8 Representative Mary Scott Hunter, commending Bailey. The resolution was approved at the last State Board of Education Meeting on November 14th in Montgomery.

Bailey stepped into action recently while walking home from school one day with two younger friends, and heard the sound of gunshots. She instinctively had the two girls, a kindergartner and first grader, lay flat on the ground while she shielded them with her jacket.  Once she noticed that it was safe, J'Nay made sure her friends made it home.

Dr. Bice, who was in Huntsville on Monday, stopped by Montview Elementary to meet J'Nay, and thank her for setting the example for other students.

Bailey credits her school training from "The Leader in Me" curriculum for knowing what to do in an emergency.
