DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WZDX) - A jail employee was arrested Wednesday and charged with stealing money from a jail detainee.

28-year-old John Culpepper of Dawson has been charged with theft. According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, his department started investigating a complaint in September that a detainee in the jail was missing $325 he had when he was booked into jail.

Culpepper was fired following his arrest.

"Law Enforcement Officers and Correction Officers hold the public's trust and even though sometimes it is tough to do, we must be held to the standards we enforce," said Sheriff Harris in a prepared statement.

Culpepper was booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center with a $1,500.00 bond.
