New Proposal for Guntersville Arts and Entertainment District
Guntersville is proposing a downtown Arts and Entertainment District .
The city of Guntersville has re-introduced a proposal to include an Arts and Entertainment District downtown.
The idea was originally voted down by council in August.
The exact parameters of the district will be announced next week, but would include a portion of Highway 431 from the River Bridge to Worth Street downtown.
Open containers of alcohol would be allowed in afternoon and early evening hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in the district.
The council will have a public hearing on the issue next Monday as some residents have expressed concern over the idea.
Guntersville Mayor Leigh Dollar said, "It was never meant to be a controversial issue. It was always meant to be about economic development and trying to improve our city. It was never meant to be about a moral issue or to upset anyone or to do anything that would cause harm to anyone."
An amended proposal will be back on the table at next week's City Council meeting.
Council is expected to vote on the issue after the public hearing.
