From Merrimack Hall:
Project UP, Merrimack Hall Performing Arts Center's performing company for teens and young adults with special needs, has been invited to perform in the Celebration of Dance Gala in Los Angeles on July 27, 2013 at The Music Center, one of the world's most preeminent performing arts venues. The Celebration of Dance Gala is presented each year on National Dance Day by the Dizzy Feet Foundation, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Music Center and in conjunction with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton.
Project UP students will perform a dance piece to John Meyer's "Waiting on the World to Change," choreographed by Hayley Henderson, Artistic Director of The Johnny Stallings Arts Program, and Melissa Reynolds, Program and Operations Director at Merrimack Hall. This powerful dance piece has been performed at Merrimack Hall, in Birmingham at the Alabama State Dance Championships (where it received a First Place Award) and in Atlanta at the NRG Dance Project. Each performance of the piece has resulted in a lengthy standing ovation.
On Wednesday, July 24, 2013, a Bon Voyage Party will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Merrimack Hall Performing Arts Center, where dancers in Project UP will perform "Waiting on the World to Change." This event is free of charge and will include performances by other students in JSAP and from Element Dance Company. Donations will be solicited at this event to help defray the costs of the trip to Los Angeles. Please join us at Merrimack Hall for this good luck send-off the night before the dancers depart for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
