COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WZDX) - Search crews found the body of a man who jumped into a creek to save his daughter. The body of Roger Hayes, 37, was found just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Hayes, who lives in New Jersey but is originally from Colbert County, was visiting with his family and spent Monday afternoon showing his daughters where he used to fish near the Colbert Steam Plant. Authorities said one of his daughters fell into Cane Creek and Hayes jumped in to save her. The 13 year-old girl was able to get out of the water and had minor injuries.
"It's very tragic but the little girl has been released from the hospital and she's doing ok" said Joshua Bradford with the Alabama Marine Police. "Its always a bad loss when you lose a loved one especially in an event like this but we were able to locate him in a reasonable time to bring some closure to the family."
Crews called off the search around 9 p.m. Monday night and resumed around 8 a.m. on Tuesday at the Cain Creek boat launch a few miles downstream from where Hayes went missing. Crews located Hayes around 400 yards from where he entered the water using search dogs and sonar equipment.
"Pickwick Lake right now is under somewhat of a flood area and there's a lot of water rushing pretty quick like and it don't take but one move to get inside some swift water with a good tow under it to pull you under" said Bradford.
