DECATUR, Ala. (WZDX)-The Affordable Housing Rehab Project is turning foreclosures into affordable homes for residents.

Staff and volunteers with Community Action Partnership of North Alabama are putting the finishing touches on a Larkwood Drive home after the non-profit organization purchased it in April as a foreclosure.

"We believe there's a shortage of affordable housing stock in the area and we're acquiring these properties and making them affordable for the public," said Jack Green who is the Chief Outcomes Officer for Community Action Partnership of North Alabama.

Contractors and volunteers have completely renovated and repaired the inside and outside of the home, including a new roof and new heating and cooling system. It will be on the market in the next few weeks.

"We're renovating it, refreshing it, getting it energy efficient and prepared for one of our housing counseling clients or customers to come and purchase it at an affordable cost," said Green.

The organization has purchased and renovated three home in Decatur in the past year and has plans to purchase even more.

"What we're trying to do is create something somebody can be proud of and that they can actually not have to look forward to a lot of repairs down the road because that's real important for low-income people, that they can actually enjoy their house" said Lorrie Mauro who is the accountant and asset manager for Community Action Partnership.

The partnership also provides financial counseling to help clients purchase the homes.

"If we didn't do it, the house could decay and become unusable and then the community would lose an affordable housing asset" said Green.

According to Green, the organization has similar programs including the management of 1,500 rental units making it the largest non-profit provider of affordable housing in the state.
