HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WZDX) - A girl was killed and eight others injured in a chain reaction wreck Tuesday evening that police said was caused by a teenager who also had caused another series of wrecks just minutes before.
Around 6 p.m., police say Gunner Joseph Scarano, 18, Owens Cross Roads, caused a wreck at Bailey Cove and Mountain Gap roads that involved three vehicles and a motorcycle. Police said Scarano left that scene, and no major injuries were reported.
Minutes later, police said Scarano hit a van at Weatherly Road, causing a chain reaction wreck involving four other vehicles.
The driver of the van had three children in the car; one was pronounced dead at the scene. In all, eight people were taken to the hospital from the second wreck scene with varying injuries. Three of the victims were in serious condition.
According to police reports, Scarano was trapped in his vehicle, which caught on fire. He was transferred to UAB Hospital's burn center with life-threatening injuries.
Huntsville police spokesman Harry Hobbs said blood samples were taken from Scarano and they are waiting on test results. Charges are pending.
