A Hero's Homecoming in Florence

FLORENCE, Ala. (WZDX) - Shane Green got quite a surprise when he finally got back to Florence after a long recovery in Birmingham.

He says, when he saw police, he knew something was up.  "The law was there waiting on us. I kept asking what was going on. What was going on. I thought I had a warrant," says Green.

Green jokes about his surprise welcome home party on Cox Creek Parkway in Florence.

"I really didn't think there was going to be this many people... It really touches me and it's going to touch Shane," says Green's niece, Rachel Green.

That surprise was a long time in the making.  Green was laid up in a hospital bed for nearly 7 weeks at U.A.B. after saving his two kids from a house fire.

He suffered burns all over his body and severe cuts that required removing all the fingers from his right hand.

Green says he wasn't worried about himself.  He just had to get his babies out of harm's way.  "I was going to die in there, as long as I got my kids out," says Green.
