HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WZDX) - The storms that swept across North Alabama Thursday afternoon caused significant damage in south Huntsville.
"I couldn't really see anything and, I mean, I couldn't see anything nowhere. it was like basically a dishwasher," said Charles Snipes. He was at work at the Exxon on the corner of Lilly Flag Rd. and Whitesburg Dr. when the lights went out.
"It sucked the doors open on the store and me and one of my buddies had to physically hold the doors shut to get them locked," he said. The storms knocked down power lines along Whitesburg Drive. The storm passed quickly and minutes later Huntsville utilities were already out working to restore power.
Not far away on 4 Mile Post Road a tree fell across the road forcing police to reroute traffic for hours. But some of the more significant damage was on and around Valley View Drive where an enormous tree crashed down on top of a home. The homeowners were not inside. Nearby yards were littered with limb debris but there was no further structural damage visible.
