HUNTSVILLE Ala. (WZDX) - It's a victory for the Rocket City! After a long fight, Huntsville won the title of host city for the 2013 Social Media Tourism Symposium. The final vote count was Huntsville:13,769 to Missoula:10,755.
The victory means approximately 300 social media enthusiasts will call Huntsville home from November 6-8. They will visit the city, taking pictures, blogging, tweeting and posting on Facebook about what makes Huntsville special. Their posts will be seen by millions of people.
"It would mean a big economic boost to our community and give us basically a big giant megaphone to tell the nation how great of a place Huntsville and Madison County is," said Jessica Carlton with the Huntsville/Madison County Visitors Bureau.
It all started months ago when Huntsville got a bid as host city for the symposium. Since then, Huntsville has gone through multiple rounds of voting, beating multiple cities including Cleveland, Indianapolis, and Missoula despite that city's last minute rally.
"They have a bunch of famous folks from Montana that have a bunch of twitter followers that they got to retweet them," Carlton said.
Huntsville worked even harder, spreading the word through social networks and street teams.
"We voted today and it's pretty cool actually. I think it will get a lot of people to Huntsville and it's a great place to be especially with the Redstone Arsenal and all the rockets. It's a great place for tourism," Olivia Hammond said.
Perhaps the best way to explain what will happen for Huntsville in a few months is to take a look at what happened for the winning team last year.
"El Paso won last year and they received 7000 Tweets and 700 Instagram photos. We want that for Madison County," Carlton said.
