FRANKLIN CO., Ala. (WZDX)- A Franklin County man is behind bars after being indicted during a March Grand Jury for the murder of Larry Graham in 1980.
Franklin Co. Sheriff Shannon Oliver said that John Donald Smith is charged with murder after cutting Graham's throat during a fight at a Spruce Pine home on February 17, 1980. Larry Graham was 28 at the time.
The case had been closed for years until new information surfaced in 2012, which led to the indictment this month.
"I know it is a big relief for the family," said Oliver. "It just goes to show you that some cases may go cold, but they don't always die. There's always some evidence that can come up and put something to rest."
Graham's wife, Felicia, said that she's happy something is finally being done.
"This is a dream and a nightmare come true," she said. "I woke up this morning and it was just like reliving the death all over again having to think about it, but I'm happy to know that no matter how long it's been, justice can happen."
Smith appeared before a Franklin Co. judge Wednesday afternoon where his bond was set at $500,000.
He was already being held in the Franklin Co. Jail on other charges.
A trial date has not been set yet.
"I dread it, but I'm planning to be at that trial every day," said Felicia. "Closure will happen when they say he's officially guilty."
