An AT&T spokesperson says a severed fiber optic cable caused a widespread telephone and Internet outage in North Alabama.
We're told a contractor was digging early this morning and hit one of AT&T's buried fiber optic cables outside of Huntsville, impacting a metro Ethernet cable serving business customers.
Crews have been working to restore the outage since an alarm went off when the cable was cut.
Several area school districts were affected along with businesses in Athens, Cullman, Decatur, Hartselle and the Shoals.
