Jackson County Sheriff Chuck Phillips said a man killed in a standoff early Tuesday morning refused to drop his weapon and fired shots.
According to Phillips, a Section police officer responded to the home on County Road 48 around 10:30 p.m. Monday for a disturbance call. The officer called for backup and when backup arrived, Jeremy Gregory, 31, pulled a gun in the front yard and fired shots.
Gregory retreated into the home, Phillips said, and the Madison County SWAT team was called in to help. Gregory would not come out despite calls to the house and over a PA system, Phillips said.
Around 5:30 a.m. SWAT officers tried tear gas in the house to get Gregory to come out. Phillips said Gregory then fired at officers and they returned fire, killing him.
Phillips said Gregory was the only person in the home and no one else was hurt. Madison County authorities and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation are assisting Jackson County in the investigation.
