The Jaguars are riding high after a huge win over a city rival. "We loved it" says Johnson Senior Charles Woodard. "It's Jag Country. We never beat Lee in six years. So, it's pretty different now."
That win was the latest of a seven game winning streak for Johnson after an 8-8 start to the 2012-2013 hoops season.
Believe it or not, it was success that caused the slow start for the Jags. The Johnson football team made it all the way to the quarterfinals last season, meaning several of the basketball team's starters were late getting on the hardwood.
Coach Maurice Ford says, "We got those guys back, like mid-November. And maybe two days before they first game against Lee."
Ford says getting those seniors on the court sparked the streak that also includes big wins over ranked 6A foes Hazel Green and Sparkman.
Wesley Bailey says, "Now, we just found our rhythm and we're trying to keep it rolling."
By peaking in the second half of the regular season, the Jaguars rallied off enough wins to win their area and will host Ardmore to open the 2013 playoffs. And that could be the start of what could be a special season for Johnson."
"If we keep playing like we've been playing, then we should do pretty well," says Woodard.
