A Shoals woman was arrested on Thursday after police said she bribed a local doctor.
55 year old Sheila Perry is charged with 2nd degree extortion.
Investigator Cliff Billingsley said that she demanded a local doctor give her $10,000 or she would accuse him of medicare fraud. The doctor's office alerted police immediately. The woman returned to the office to collect the money. After demanding the money for a second time, she was handed an envelope. Investigators were watching the entire thing and arrested her after she accepted.
"This shows an example of what will happen to you if you try to pull a scam like this," said Billingsley. "Blackmail is illegal. We still find it every once and awhile. They did a great thing by reporting it to use early."
Perry was released from the Lauderdale Co. Detention Center on $1,000 bond.
