Two New Habitat for Humanity Homes

Twice the work, twice the volunteers, and twice the donations made for Habitat for Humanity of Morgan County's first double home dedication.

"This is the first time we have ever built two houses side by side and started them at the same time. We began them in September and we're dedicating them the middle of November," said Habitat Director, Mindy Thwing.

Two mother/daughter families were presented with keys to their new homes in Decatur.

"Truly, this will be the first day of the rest of their lives because nothing will be the same again. They are a solid family unit, which is what we are about," Thwing said.

Two years and 8 days ago Felecia Burt walked into Habitat of Morgan County for the first time. Sunday she became the owner of their 63rd home.

"It took the breath out of me. I couldn't even walk through my front doors. Because it had been a long journey. Being able to come in and just to know that you have the strength to be able to work, and to be a mother, and to be able to have all of it come together, and just to go to class and prepare for one of the most big events in your life," Burt said.

Next door to her, Tessa Swindle and her daughter were also handed the keys to a new home.

"I just want to thank everybody. It was an amazing journey it really was. I met so many wonderful people and I thank you," Swindle said.

Two more families and two more homes are already in the planning stages for spring builds. For Habitat, it's all about offering hope to hard workers in the community that were facing hard times.

"This is their second chance. This is something that would not have happened for them had Habitat and their sponsors not been willing to take a chance on them, step forward and say you are deserving of a second chance in life," Thwing said.
