The Madison County coroner said Melba Davis, 72, died of smoke inhalation in the fire on Governors Drive around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The house is located in an area across the street from Huntsville Hospital.
The back of the house was on fire when firefighters arrived. They were able to contain the blaze quickly.
At this time officials do not know the cause of this deadly fire.
"In a general statement, this time of year we typically see more fires," said Deputy Chief Howard McFarlen with the Huntsville Fire Department.
"Everyone needs to make sure smoke detectors are working properly," said McFarlen.
Officials are currently processing the scene and trying to determine the cause of the fire.
