A Huntsville teen is dead after being struck by a train Friday afternoon.
Lee High School students gathered on the tracks at Oakwood Avenue after hearing one of their own had been hit.
"I thought to myself he is going to get hit by a train. Why is that kid walking on the tracks and then 7 minutes later the train just stopped," said a Lee High student.
Police say the student was walking on the tracks, and when the train conductor saw him he was too close to stop.
"The conductor reports he was southbound on the tracks. Observed the pedestrian walking on the tracks made repeated attempts to gain his attention by sounding the horn on the train, but got no response and was unable to stop the train before striking the pedestrian," said Huntsville Police Lieutenant Randy Owens.
Students at Lee High remained at the scene hours after the incident coming together to try to understand and cope with the sudden loss of their classmate.
"I just cant imagine a student at our school dying. And he was so young its crazy. Its just really devastating," said a Lee High Student.
The Huntsville Police Department is handing the investigation.
The students name is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.
