The John Hunt Park Master Plan generated a lot of excitement Thursday night at the first of three public forums.
"We've had a lot of good input tonight. We feel like we can take this and put it into the master plan," said Parks and Recreation Manager Steve Ivey.
The John Hunt Master Plan is a work in progress. The latest version was available for public view at Thursday's forum.
"It just looks like a tremendous use of the land, the old airport. With the great combination of green space and facilities it will be quite a gathering place," said forum attendee Helen Gillespie.
Much of the area of John Hunt Park is covered in old runways from Huntsville's Old Airport. Removing those runways will be the first step in the park redesign.
"For everybody to believe this is a park, what they are going to have to do is come in and removed that old asphalt, plant some trees, and green it up. That's what we want to do," Ivey said.
After the city briefed the public on the details and phases of the master plan, the community was able to talk one on one with city officials and have their questions answered. They were also able to post their ideas on a picture board of the showing an aerial view of the park.
"This is such a great concept. We need more tennis courts number one, for the public," Connie Keltner said.
The city has also created an online idea board. The Imagine Huntsville website has over 2,000 postings.
"We are going to try to take everybody's ideas and try to do as much as we can," Ivey said.
The last two public forums will be held:
Sunday November 18th- Dr. Richard Showers Sr. Recreation Center - 2 p.m.
Tuesday November 20th- Planning and Commission Meeting- City Council Chambers
