Albertville Grandmother Officially Charged

Posted: Updated:

Albertville police have officially charged a woman who hit her grandson with her SUV Wednesday afternoon.

Rebecca Jane Elrod, 52, was already arrested for driving under the influence after the accident that killed 2-year-old Lukas Daniel. Police say Elrod was pulling through the yard on Diane Avenue to leave when the toddler was hit.

Elrod was arrested for DUI after police say they determined she was under the influence of prescription medication.

Albertville police say Elrod was arrested for DUI in 2003 and 2007, but the charges in both cases were dismissed after she completed court referred programs.

Court records show Elrod also was arrested in August 2011 in Marshall County for driving under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance, improper lane usage and driving on the wrong side of the highway. The traffic violations were dismissed, and the DUI charge was dismissed in June 2012 on the condition that she submit to random drug tests.

Elrod has been released on a $2,500 bond.
