Amy Bishop Shipped Out of Madison County

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A defense lawyer says a former Alabama college professor who pleaded guilty to shooting six people had to be talked into accepting a plea deal that took away the possibility of a death penalty.

An attorney for Amy Bishop told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Massachusetts native was terrified of being sexual abused in Alabama's lone women's prison. Lawyer Roy Miller says she also didn't want to "live in a chicken coop the rest of her life."

Miller says the 47-year-old Bishop agreed to plead guilty and accept a life sentence only after talking with her parents.

Bishop is also charged with murder in the death of her teen-aged brother in Massachusetts in 1986. It's not clear whether she'll stand trial on the charge there.
