Financial Assistance for Victims of April 27th

Posted: Updated:

In April 2011 more than 6,000 homes were destroyed by tornadoes that ripped across Alabama. Today many of those homeowners are still waiting for relief, and thanks to a new state grant they're finally about to get it.

By making a phone call to the Community Action Partnership of North Alabama, families whose homes were damaged in the April 2011 tornados could receive financial assistance.

"Those folks, if they are at home and coping and still finding it difficult to recover, they need to call the toll free number and ask for help," said Jack Green with the Community Action Partnership.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs announced in a press conference Thursday that owners of single family homes affected could receive up to $25,000 for repairs. This money is coming to the state through a Community Development Block Grant.

"We've set up this program to help people who have fallen through the cracks or haven't been able to get any assistance or didn't know any assistance was available. so we've allocated about 6 to 8 million dollars for this program," said ADECA representative, Jim Plott.

Families in 30 Alabama counties are eligible to apply. The three agencies accepting applications are located in Decatur, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery. The Community Action Partnership of North Alabama in Decatur is prepared to represent 6 of the 30 counties.

"We expect to take about 600 applications in the 6 counties and right now we have identified about 142 people that could be eligible for this program and without the CDBG housing assistance they wouldn't be able to recover," Green said.

Applications will be taken up to October 31st. The service agency coverage area and contact information is as follows:
