MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's tax-free weekend for back-to-school purchases is underway.
The seventh annual tax holiday began at 12:01 a.m. Friday and runs through Sunday night. Gov. Robert Bentley says shoppers can skip paying the 4 percent state sales tax on many purchases. More than 250 cities and counties are also waiving their local sales taxes
The president of the Alabama Retail Association, Rick Brown, said stores see an influx of shoppers during the tax-free weekend, and it is a major boost to their business.
Eligible items include clothing costing less than $100 per item, computers and computer supplies selling for less than $750, school supply items costing less than $50 each, and books priced less than $30 each.
