Accused Tuscaloosa Bar Shooter on Suicide Watch

Posted: Updated:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say the suspect in a shooting rampage at an Alabama bar is on suicide watch at the county jail.

Investigators say Nathan Van Wilkins told police he hoped that officers would kill him.

Police have charged the 44-year-old Wilkins with 18 counts of attempted murder. The charges account for 17 people wounded at a bar near the University of Alabama campus and another person shot beforehand at a home.

It's not clear what may have set Wilkins off, but he had recently been fired from his job after a fistfight. He also filed for bankruptcy last year and had been divorced in 2005.

Court records show he served around 10 days in jail in 2004 for violating a restraining order obtained by his ex-wife.
