It was the power of the people at Tuesday night's meeting of the Lincoln County Commission. Hundreds of Lincoln County residents filled the meeting to capacity to voice opposition to a property tax increase. Their elected officials took notice and put off the tough decision.
Among the reasons residents are opposed, include those on a fixed income can't afford the increase and it will put a burden on homeowners' budgets. Some also feel their elected officials should find ways to cut back instead of raising taxes.
We found that Lincoln County's tax rate is significantly lower than those in nearby counties. And, the increase from 1.79 to 2.56 percent would put it on par with the others, but with all the loud opposition, elected officials did not want to pass it.
The county commission will go back to the budget committee to put together a plan for the budget's October deadline.
