A maintenance project set to begin Monday on the Tennessee River Bridge could cause serious traffic delays.
The Alabama Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that the $6.8 million project to apply overlay will be completed by early August.
The repaving project will cause single lane closures and lenghty traffic delays. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes if possible.
Debbie Shorr travels from Birmingham to Huntsville every morning, and dreads finding a way around the bridge.
"Whenever you get a detour the delays are outrageous because you have to go in 20 miles and then back up 10 to 20 miles to get back to another part of the interstate. Its going to turn my two hour commute into maybe three and a half everyday, one way. I don't know if I can do it," Shorr said.
Delays are expected to be worst during morning and evening rush hour traffic. Alabama State Troopers will strictly enforce the 50mph speed limit in the work zone.
