(MYFOX NATIONAL) - A new survey finds that people across all parties believe South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford should resign following his revelation that he was having an affair with a woman in Argentina.

The study done by HCD Research, which surveyed 614 self-reported Republicans, Democrats and Independents, asked respondents to rate Sanford's sincerity when he apologized for his actions. On a scale of 1 to 7, respondents on average gave Sanford a 3.2 in terms of his sincerity. His score was lower than David Letterman's whose average rating was 4.2 after people viewed video of his apology to Sarah Palin's family.

But viewers did rate one part of Sanford's apology high. "We noticed that there was a significant increase in sincerity levels across all parties when Sanford talks about his wife sticking by his side through the years and all his campaigns," explained Glenn Kessler, president and CEO, HCD Research. "However, there was a similar drop in sincerity levels when he apologizes to his staff."

In terms of how Sanford scored across parties, Republicans and Independents thought his apology was more sincere than Democrats. Republicans rated Sanford's sincerity a 3.9, Independents rated him a 3.7 and Democrats rated him a 3.5.
